5 Ingredients by Jamie Oliver

5 Ingredients by Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver is one of my absolute food heroes, he’s one of the people I turned to (well not in person obviously) when I started cooking – for recipes, inspiration, tips, .. so it should come as no surprise I have almost all of his cookbooks and watch all his tv shows. Although I love all of his books, his latest book ‘5 Ingredients’ straight away became my favourite cookbook of all time. The look & feel, the recipes, the simplicity of it all are just stunning! I have tried a few recipes from it already and they’ll be on my menu regularly from now on as they were an absolute hit.

Let me start by going over the look & feel of the book. Each page has the same style as every other page in the book. On the left side of the left page you’ll see a photo of each of the ingredients. Right next to it you’ll find the overview of ingredients and the method for the recipe. On the right page then you’ll find a photo of the finished recipe, always shot on a marble background. Simplicity at its finest but boy does it do the trick! The look of the book will help you feel like these recipes are simple yet delicious and stunning.

Now of course when you first hear that every recipe will only have 5 ingredients you start the wonder if they won’t lack flavour or just won’t be filling enough. So far though I haven’t had any complaints, as I’ve made two recipes already. One is a colourful salad made of butternut squash, rose harissa, avocados, salad leaves and mozzarella. I had never used or even tasted harissa before but wow, what a great spice to add to squash! I’m a huge lover of avocado’s so I of course loved that part of the salad, but I also liked that it had mozzarella which is one of my favourite salad cheeses, especially Irish buffalo mozzarella from Macroom. The seeds of the butternut are also added to the salad at the end, giving a nice crunchy element.

Another recipe I tried was Sticky Mango Prawns, with garlic, curry powder, lime, prawns and mango chutney. Again, really easy to make, basic ingredients you can find anywhere and it took no time at all to make. I served mine with some sweet potatoes and it was absolutely tasty as well. The sweetness of the mango with the crispy garlic and the sourness of the lime all worked well together.

There are quite a few other recipes that I can not wait to try, like Duck and orange salad, Watermelon, radish & feta salad, easy sausage carbonara, aubergine penne arrabbiata, hot-smoked salmon pasta and much more! I am especially intrigued by the recipes, as it seems bonkers to be able to make something like plum tarte tatin, frozen banoffee cheesecake or cherry chocolate mousse with only 5 ingredients.
